Cleanup underway in SC after tornadoes hit

LEXINGTON, S.C. (FOX 46 CHARLOTTE) – Neighbors in Lexington, S.C. are still shaken by two tornados hit the area. 

Scraps are all that’s left after winds picked up seven thousand pounds of metal, throwing it across the road and tearing apart mobile homes.

“Literately picking campers up off their property, Tires are upside down,” John’s RV Sales owner Randy Rawl said. 

The twisters were strong enough to toss RV’s across the street, tearing through Lexington, SC.  

“If all of them would have gone out, no telling what would have happened,” Mary Ann Rislinger said. 

In the middle of Sunday night service, one tornado took out two columns outside Red Bank Baptist Church. 

“Children were signing ‘Jesus loves me,’” Rislinger told FOX 46.

She says members huddled in the hallway, signing through the storm

“I had my wife with me. We came around the corner and was like holy. It was just surreal,” Rawl said. 

We caught up with the National Weather Service surveying the damage 

“What we are looking at is winds maybe as high as 100-110 mph.” 

Neighbors are picking up fences and picking up the pieces, with their thoughts on the more than 20 people killed in Alabama from the same line of storms. 

“All these RVs can be replaced, people cannot,” Rawl said. 

If there’s any silver lining, Rawl says the dealership just moved headquarters and most of their inventory last week, or else they could have been cleaning up five times the damage.
